Topic: The Pearl Program

Technology is starting to advance as time progresses, and DLSZ is not one to be left behind. The freshmen students of school year 2012-2013 are using tablets (Samsung, iPad) in place of books and notebooks. This advance of DLSZ to cope with the times and make use of the new technologies we are supplied with is called “The Pearl Program.”

iPads and other tablets, as we know are very accessible and have many kinds of applications that can help in taking down notes, and even research because of easy access to the internet. The use of the tablets is very convenient for both students and teachers not only because their books, now called eBooks are available on the tablets, but also because the tablets are lightweight. More class activities can be done with the help of certain applications in making it a more creative and enjoyable way of learning. The Pearl Program was launched in order to determine that using the tablets are more efficient than using textbooks and notebooks the old fashioned way.

Although the Pearl Program definitely has its advantages, it also has some downsides to it. Charging the tablets would be a problem because of the limited sockets provided. Also, the prices of applications in the app store may vary due to the number of those using the application. And the tablets have many kinds of applications, even games, and students might play instead of paying attention to lectures in class. Since the school is still new to the concept of using tablets, a program has yet to be developed that can monitor the tablets so the teachers can take note of what the students are doing. With the many pros and cons to The Pearl Program, some say that implementing it across the school would be a good idea.

The Pearl Program aims to help students and teachers in creating a creative and fun way to learn and teach lessons. Though just a trial period, the Pearl Program seems to be doing fine and it wouldn’t be too hard to work out a few bugs in the system. DLSZ desires to create a different yet effective learning experience for their students and sees this in the launch of The Pearl Program.

1. Pollution in our country

By: Micaela Atayde  Image

– The people of the Philippines don’t really realize how much of an importance cleanliness is to our country. The Philippines has so much beautiful land and natural resources and all we’re doing is ruining it cause of pollution. We throw our trash on the ground, polluting our oceans with dirt, and also polluting our air and inhaling unhealthy toxic wastes. Pollution is one of the main reasons why humans are prone to sicknesses and why also a lot of animals become extinct. There are many ways to lessen pollution and yet some people do not seem to follow these ways, ways such as the 3 R’s (Reduce,Reuse,Recycle),Waste segregation, conservation of electricity ,etc. If we all do these simple things, our country could really benefit from it and so will we. We would benefit from it cause our air would be cleaner and healthier to inhale, our natural resources would get healthier and could attract more tourists, our animals could live happily in their habitats and our country would be a better place. I do think if we all do our part, we could fix many problems in our country and society. So i ask all of you to make a difference, do your part and change our country for the better.

2. Technology as a distraction to the youth

By: Micaela Atayde Image

-Modern technology has been developing throughout the years and the children of today are very fond of using electronics such as computers, cellphones, game boys, etc. And these electronics can be very useful yet very distracting. Computers are very useful because they help students with creating projects, papers, and the like. This is the same for professionals that make proposals, presentations, and documents. Computers also help with making videos, saving pictures, and storing music. But at the same time Computers can also be a great distraction because for example, when children use it for researches, they end up getting distracted and they start using social networks like Facebook and twitter or they start playing games on gaming sites and cause of that occurring, their grades get lower and same goes to professionals with their jobs. But I’m not mainly talking about Computers but also other electronic gadgets as well. Basically electronics help us In our daily lives, to make it convenient for us and to also make our work load faster. We just have to know our limit when it comes to using our technology and we have to set our priorities straight in order for us to not get distracted and we must use our electronics wisely.

3. Poverty

By: Micaela Atayde Image

– In the Philippines, Poverty remains as the most critical social problem in our country that needs to be addressed. According to the data from the National Statistical Coordination Board, More than one quarter (26.5%) of the population falls below poverty line in 2009. These numbers should sound like alarms to our government, yet everyday we still see the less fortunate and nothing seems to change. Poverty is a social issue that not only affects the Philippines but a lot of countries in the world. Like in Africa people die from poverty and hunger and half of the world, nearly 3 billion people live less on 2 dollars a day. Nearly a billion people entered the 21st century without knowing how to read or sign their names and the wealthiest nation on earth has the widest gap between the rich and poor of any industrialized nation. There are many problems occurring and Poverty is one that needs to be fixed, therefore I think our government should take action and us people should help in any possible why. Our government should make projects such as fundraisers, donations, giving free schooling to the less fortunate children, the rest of us citizens must take part and show our pride by supporting these projects so little by little we can solve our country’s social issues.

4. RH BILL

By: Miel Cruz Image

RH bill had been one of the controversial issues that our country is tackling today. But what is RH bill? Reproductive Health Bill, or RH Bill, for short are proposed laws in the Republic of the Philippines aiming to guarantee universal access to methods on contraception, fertility control, sexual education, and maternal care.
The Catholic church vehemently abhors contraception and is very strong in their fight to stop the passage of the RH bill. On the other hand, Senator Pia Cayetano , a staunch supporter of the RH bill explains the importance of sex education. She believes there 5 misconceptions about the RH bill namely; that the RH bill legalizes abortion. Secondly, contraceptives are evil and that people can afford contraceptives, that the RH bill is the same as the Magna Carta bill and finally, that sex education promotes promiscuity.
But why do we need these contraception? Is it because of poverty? Overpopulation? Unwanted pregnancies? Or all of the above? Whether you are pro or anti RH bill, I believe that you should thoroughly study all aspects of the bill to further understand it. It should benefit the whole country and uplift their lives.

The Philippine Culture

kapisanan-illustration  image

The invasion of the Philippines by Spain did not begin until 1564. The Philippines has been colonized by many and it also encountered numerous effects, one great effect would be the formation of the countries culture. The arts of the Philippines reflect a society with diverse cultural influences and traditions. Most modern aspects of Philippine cultural life evolved under the foreign rule of Spain and, later, the United States. Three centuries under Spanish rule followed by 50 years of American influence has made the Philippines an Asian country unlike any other.

The Philippine Culture has been influenced in many ways, through arts, through food, through customs, and even through our religion. Common traditions of Filipinos are simple greetings such as, “Mano Po”, when the younger member of a family will take the elders hand and place the back of it to their forehead. Also the use of “Ate” or “Kuya” to show respect to the elders & even holding a gathering or family reunion just to catch up the update of every family members. Simple gestures and simple acts of kindness are what make Filipinos so hospitable. In the Philippines, Family relationships could also be a building block of the Philippine culture and society. Because of the tradition of having close knitted families and a closer relationship customarily enlarged through a ritual co-parenthood called “ninong” and “ninang” (Godparents), to sponsor one’s child at baptism and promote religion. Also, to sponsor when one member of the family will get married is another way of saying that in the Philippines, we involve unity with one another. From passed events & tragedies that have occurred in the Philippines, It clearly shows how kind-hearted and very hopeful the Filipinos can be. Also to mention that the Philippines has many natural resources and a flavorful cuisine to be proud of. Being able to attract foreigners because of the goods this country can offer such as the famous “Adobo” & “Sinigang”, not forgetting the famous “Lechon Kawali”. Foreigners truly enjoy such a colorful cuisine this country can give. Of course, for them to really feel the Philippine culture, they also travel to our famous beaches and provinces to explore the Filipinos roots.

The Philippines is composed of many cross-breeds of foreigners with Filipinos and whatever it may be, being in the Philippines, living in the Philippines, and being involved with the Philippine culture and traditions is what makes you a true Filipino. By showing the true Filipino pride and being proud to say that the Philippines is one great country, is what truly makes you a Filipino. This country has taught everyone that Filipinos are great and we have an amazing culture. By keeping up their strong faith in God is what brings the country together. Come to the Philippines and see for yourself, one of the greatest countries in the world.
